Carinthia is Austria's lake state — and the event season revolves accordingly around Lake Wörthersee, Lake Millstatt, Lake Weissensee and Lake Ossiach.

The Wörthersee has hosted the bigger open-air concerts and beach parties for decades, and Klagenfurt's Wörthersee stadium doubles as a venue for stadium acts. In the shoulder season the focus shifts to Nassfeld, Bad Kleinkirchheim and the ski resorts, where après-ski events and season openings fill the calendars. Klagenfurt itself has solid concert venues in the Volkertheater, the Stadthaus and the Wörthersee-Saal; the scene around Kulturverein Kramer and the Villach city theatre regularly delivers indie culture. Typically Carinthian: the Kufenstechen, church fairs and pilgrimages that keep folk tradition alive in the side valleys.

Insider tip: Wörthersee classical concerts mostly take place in July and are often under-booked — the box office is more of a real option here than elsewhere in Austria.
