Favoriten Book & Direction: Ruth Beckermann, Austria 2024, Documentary, 120 minutes Thu, December 3, 7:00 PM For three years, Ruth Beckermann followed a class of students aged seven to ten and their dedicated teacher at a large elementary school in Vienna's Favoriten district, an ethnically diverse former working-class neighborhood often described in the media as the "most dangerous district of Vienna." More than sixty percent of Vienna's elementary school students do not speak German as their first language, and the education system suffers from a severe teacher shortage. Although these issues are clearly present in the film, they are not addressed directly in Favoriten. Instead, we get to know the children as individuals, observing how they learn, grow, and develop up to their final year of elementary school. By getting to know Favoriten, we experience a critical period that will significantly shape their future. Awards: Viennale 2024: Special Jury Prize
