Galerie Gmünd

Gmünd in Kärnten, Carinthia

ausstellung

For twenty-five years, Galerie Gmünd has been a centerpiece of the cultural work of Kulturinitiative Gmünd. Housed in a former stable building in the middle of the Old Town, Galerie Gmünd sees itself as a platform for young, contemporary visual art. The exhibitions in this special place aim to introduce visitors to current trends in the Austrian and international art scene. Classical genres such as painting and graphics have their place here, as do installations and cross-over performances, sculpture, and conceptual positions. The artists have the opportunity to incorporate the special architectural environment of the gallery, the barn architecture with an open roof truss, the dark grey, rough natural stone walls, and also the beautiful courtyard of the building into the exhibition design. By integrating the outdoor space into the gallery operations, visitors are made aware of the gallery premises, and the public is even more involved in contemporary art. The program of Galerie Gmünd is sponsored by Dolomitenbank. Program 2026: Thomas Scherzer - Installation The interactive installations, sculptures, and design objects by the artist and architect Thomas Scherzer invite active experience of space. At the center is a new work developed specifically for Gmünd – created with Willem van Engen and Travis Dent: Fourteen fern-like elements react to the proximity and movements of visitors, opening and closing and constantly reshaping the space. Those who enter become part of a living system that makes questions of access, control, and belonging immediately tangible. The exhibition is complemented by the interactive flower landscape “Blumenveld,” the kinetic sculpture “Rollin’,” and the inflatable installation “Rolrups” – a playful invitation to experience art with all senses. Thomas Scherzer (born 1982 in Villach) studied architecture at TU Wien and worked for several years in international studios in Austria and Great Britain before moving to Amsterdam. His artistic focus is on interactive spatial concepts and installation works that operate at the interface of design, technology, and perception. His works have been shown in Austria, the Netherlands, and Germany, among other places. The exhibition by Thomas Scherzer in Galerie Gmünd can be seen daily from May 1 to September 27, 2026, from 10 AM - 1 PM and 3 PM - 6 PM. Further information HERE Free admission!
