GIRL. WOMAN. OTHER. Iconic Female Portraits from Matisse to Alex Katz The summer exhibition 2026 at Kunsthaus Gmünd is dedicated to the depiction of women in 20th and 21st century art. It will show images of women from classical modernism to today: Henri Matisse's dancers meet Picasso's muses and the luminous portraits of Alex Katz, complemented by powerful works by contemporary artists. The exhibition "Girl. Woman. Other." unfolds a polyphonic panorama of female role models – from mother figure and icon to courageous fighter and unwavering everyday heroine. Kunsthaus Gmünd thus once again presents an exhibition that brings international masterpieces into an impressive dialogue with current artistic perspectives. An exhibition where art and life meet. With the summer exhibition "Girl. Woman. Other. Iconic Female Portraits from Matisse to Alex Katz", Kunsthaus Gmünd celebrates women and thus dedicates itself to one of the central themes of art history. A selection of prints and selected sculptures, as multifaceted as it is high-caliber, will be shown, making images of women from the 20th and 21st centuries visible in all their facets. The exhibition focuses on great names of modern and contemporary art: Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Louise Bourgeois, Alex Katz and Julian Opie form striking focal points. Matisse's famous dancers, in reduced form and flowing movement, stand for freedom, rhythm and joy of life. Picasso's graphic works revolve around muse and lover – images between admiration, projection and artistic appropriation. Louise Bourgeois is represented with penetrating etchings on the mother figure and spider, which tell of protection, memory and vulnerability. With Alex Katz and Julian Opie, the view opens into the present: their works show women as self-confident, timeless figures between everyday life, iconization and contemporary visual language. "Girl. Woman. Other." sees itself as an invitation to look closely – to marvel, compare and think further. The exhibition shows how diverse, contradictory and powerful images of women in art can be, and at the same time builds a bridge between international art history and contemporary artistic practice. The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive supporting and educational program with lecture, film and literature matinees as well as offers for families and school classes. A free children's accompanying booklet also inspires a young audience for the exhibition. OPENING HOURS The exhibition opens on May 1, 2026, 11 am, at Kunsthaus Gmünd.
