Exhibition "Goldene Bilderwelten" - Julia Bangert

What's it about?

Julia Bangert shows book illumination from the Middle Ages to the present. Opening on Saturday, April 25, 2026 at 2 p.m. The exhibition runs until October 31, 2026. Julia Bangert works for the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz and hand-illuminates reproductions of the famous Gutenberg Bible, which are available in the museum shop, based on original models. In addition, she works as a freelance book illuminator and designs individually crafted initials, artistically decorated initial letters, and animal depictions. Inspired by historical models, she creates her own works in the style of the Middle Ages, as well as in a contemporary modern style. The exhibition features a series of manuscripts with texts about animals in the style of a medieval bestiary. Originally, these are moralizing poetry that connects the characteristics of animals and mythical creatures with Christian salvation teachings. The artist provides insights into her working process and demonstrates step-by-step how book illuminations are created. She also presents reproductions of pages from the Gutenberg Bible that she has illuminated herself. Admission: Museum.
