What's it about?

The Greiner years of teacher Ludwig Commenda from 1892 to 1906 Two large-format, handwritten family chronicles, recently discovered in a private archive, contain a local history treasure. Over more than 90 pages, the author of the "Illustrated Guide through the Machland," chairman of the German gymnastics club, choir master of the Grein Liederkranz, and secretary of the Grein Fire Brigade autobiographically describes civic life in Grein around 1900. Commenda was a contemporary witness to the construction of the water supply, the opening of the Danube Riverside Railway, the wedding trip of Duke Carl Eduard of Saxony, Coburg and Gotha, and the great floods at the end of the 19th century. Supplemented by newspaper articles, letters, club and school chronicles, and well-illustrated with contemporary photos from various private archives, a local time travel has been created, to which we warmly invite you.
