Nationalpark-Ausstellung "Erlebnis Zirbe"

What's it about?

St. Jakob in Defereggen, which can count the Oberhauser Zirbenwald (a large Swiss pine forest) as its territory, boasts the largest contiguous Swiss pine forest in the Eastern Alps. The alpine climate here is said to breathe life into visitors. The very slow-growing Swiss pine can live up to 1,000 years, reach a diameter of up to two meters, and grow to a height of just over 20 meters. Special schnapps and liqueurs are made from its cones. Woodcarvers in the region use almost exclusively the soft Swiss pine wood for their artworks. Visitors can learn about this tree, which belongs to the pine family, and much more at the free exhibition "Erlebnis Zirbe" (Swiss Pine Experience) at the Handelshaus in the center of St. Jakob in Defereggen.
