Oberhauser Zirbenwald

The Oberhauser Zirbenwald is the largest contiguous stone pine forest in the Eastern Alps. The very slow-growing stone pine can reach an age of up to 1,000 years, a diameter of up to two meters, and a height of just over 20 meters. Special schnapps and liqueurs are made from its cones. Woodcarvers in the region use almost exclusively the soft stone pine wood for their artworks. The Oberhaus wildlife observation tower in the Defereggental also offers a special nature experience for all ages. High above the treetops, the 22-meter-high tower invites you to let your gaze wander over the Hohe Tauern National Park and the largest contiguous stone pine forest in the Eastern Alps. With luck and a little patience, you might spot an eagle, bearded vulture, deer, chamois, or marmot when looking over the treetops. The charming backdrop of the contiguous stone pine forest can best be experienced during a walk on the Oberhauser Zirbenwald Nature and Culture Trail.
