"Heritage Day" at the Palm House
What's it about?
On Sunday, September 27, 2026, hundreds of monuments across Austria will once again open their doors with free admission. Under the motto "Monuments: Value for all.", the historic Palm House in Gmünd Castle Park also invites visitors on a journey of discovery between past and future from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM.The striking building was erected in the second half of the 19th century under Archduke Sigismund of Austria. Originally, it served for the cultivation and presentation of special and rare plants. With its early historicist architecture and its location in the English landscape park, the Palm House still forms an important part of the historical ensemble and an architectural peculiarity of the Waldviertel. After its renovation in the early 1980s, the Palm House was primarily used as an event venue.Now a new stage is approaching: In the course of preparations for the Lower Austrian Provincial Exhibition 2028, the building will be further developed and prepared for future use. On Heritage Day, visitors will gain insights into the planned redesign, the future use of the Palm House, and its role in the Provincial Exhibition 2028.This vividly illustrates the value monuments have for everyone: They shape places and identity, make history tangible, and show how historical building fabric can be sustainably developed.
