What's it about?

A war veteran volunteers in 1918 to join a people's defense unit to participate in the fight for Carinthia's unity and freedom. In the summer of 1919, however, the front of the Carinthian resistance against a Serbian-Slovenian superior force collapses. Klagenfurt is occupied by enemy troops, and everywhere in the city there is outright terror. The Carinthian state government flees to St. Veit, and no one believes anymore that southern Carinthia, occupied by Slovenes, can be held. Hans Steinacher manages to convince Governor Arthur Lemisch to force a decision for Carinthia through an unprecedented propaganda campaign after the victorious powers in Paris ordered a referendum for Carinthia. Until the day of the decision, a spiritual resistance fight rages in occupied southern Carinthia. Tonnes of propaganda leaflets are smuggled over the Drau River as a demarcation line under the threat of death. The dangers of that time are depicted through the example of the young war veteran and resistance fighter. His dramatic experiences as a fearless smuggler form the content of this gripping Carinthian novella.
