
Why did people in antiquity throw coins into wells, hide money, or deposit it in unusual places? Was it a savings hoard, an accidental loss – or an offering to the gods?Based on exciting coin finds, it will be shown what ancient money can tell us about the everyday life, ideas, and world of people. The search for clues ranges from small coin hoards in Roman houses to enigmatic treasure finds with criminal-archaeological features. The focus will also be on examples from Carinthia and the special situation in the Lavanttal.A lecture about hidden treasures, ancient customs, and the question of whether there is sometimes more behind a coin than one might assume at first glance.Ursula Schachinger is an Austrian numismatist, ancient historian, classical philologist, and archaeologist, who is considered an expert on ancient monetary circulation and Roman coins.She has been a lecturer and instructor for ancient numismatics (Graz, Klagenfurt...) for many years.
