Wearable jewelry made by hand according to his own creations – that was and is his goal! In 1987, the time had come and Berndt Kulterer opened his own small jewelry studio in Wolfsberg. Many doubters wondered if it would go well... A business without display windows, on the 1st floor and only accessible via a worn wooden staircase, with a bell and surveillance camera with door opener at the door. But it worked – perhaps precisely because of that. After a relocation to Sporergasse with a larger workshop and exhibition space, the current studio with gallery operations was finally moved into in 2004. Berndt Kulterer loves straightforward and clear forms and translates them into creative jewelry ideas. Whether for fingers, neck, cuffs, ears or décolleté – ideas are realized, materials combined. Kulterer has a particular weakness, which he openly admits. He can hardly resist beautiful gemstones! “Much inspiration comes from the fascination of stones and their cut variations, and it happens to me again and again that I am so captivated by the power of the stones that I simply buy them,” says Berndt Kulterer. “Sometimes it takes me years to transform these gemstones into pieces of jewelry – because the wearability of my jewelry is an additional challenge for me. I make everything myself according to my own designs. Of course, my customers also have the opportunity to contribute their wishes. This often turns unloved pieces that lead a miserable existence in a drawer into a favorite ring or the most worn earrings.” Kulterer works with all classic jewelry materials. But gold, platinum, silver and gemstones are repeatedly complemented in Kulterer's design by new, atypical materials. Steel, wood, leather, rubber, coatings are just a few examples of the variety of materials used.
