What's it about?

The exhibition in the crypt of the New Cathedral in cooperation with the art collection of the Province of Upper Austria in Linz examines, as part of an artistic residency, the reception and appropriation of the Upper Austrian Peasant War of 1626 and questions the reinterpretation of resistance, memory, and history in artistic works. The exhibition is created as part of an artistic residency in cooperation with the art collection of the Province of Upper Austria and deals with the reception and appropriation of the Upper Austrian Peasant War of 1626. The starting point is the Peasant War as a symbol of resistance, whose interpretations have been politically reshaped over centuries. It takes place in the crypt of the New Cathedral in Linz – a publicly accessible sacred space that, as a place of remembrance and interpretation, forms a fitting setting for engaging with history. The focus is on questions of resistance, resilience, and memory: How has history been told, instrumentalized, and made effective to this day? The artistic contributions examine how these narratives can be critically questioned and what role art can play in reflecting on historical appropriation. With works by Janne Marie Dauer, Miriam Walcherberger-Kößler, Oscar Lebeck, Gabrielle Schuller, Mara Pollak, Lydia Wassner-Hauser, Verena Dolovai, Ferdinand Reisenbichler; Crypt Program 14:00 - 18:00 Exhibition by the Residency Artists Cathedral Cafe Program 15:00 - 15:45 Reading with Verena Dolovai (part of the Residency program) In cooperation with communale oö 2026.
