Hemmaberg – Summit Plateau: Guided Tours

Saturday 19 September · 16:30Pilgermuseum Globasnitz · kaernten

What's it about?

Hemmaberg is located in the foothills of the Karawanken near the village of Globasnitz. Its conveniently situated summit plateau already shows signs of settlement from pre-Roman times. During Roman times, as an inscription reveals, a local, older deity named Iovenat (Iouenat) was worshipped, from which the name of the road station in the valley, Iuenna, as well as the current name of the Jauntal valley, are derived. In late antiquity, around 400 AD, a high-altitude settlement was established on Hemmaberg next to the valley settlement in a protected location, surrounded by a fortification wall. The inhabitants here were mostly Christians. Over the course of the 5th century AD, a pilgrimage site developed with several large churches decorated with mosaic floors.
