Öblarner Krampusspiel - UNESCO Cultural Heritage

What's it about?

Things that were once everyday are now becoming special again because they have often already disappeared. One of the last Styrian folk plays will be performed again this year on December 5, 2026, at 7:00 PM at the Öblarner main square. The Öblarner Krampusspiel is a sure guarantee for a frightfully beautiful Krampus evening. After the debate between Summer and Winter, the wild crowd appears and transports us back to a time when Archduke Johann, in 1816, admired the primitive figures during a visit to Gstatt Castle. Majestically, the Schab (a traditional figure), with their whips, make way for the play. In the debate between Summer and Winter, the forces of nature struggle for dominance, and Flechtenmandl devils and a blacksmith come from afar. The tradition of a visit to a mountain farmstead from long ago is reenacted at the main square, giving spectators a sense of how this custom has been practiced for hundreds of years.
