Enamelling is a process in which a glass-like layer is applied to metal surfaces to refine and protect them. The process begins with the careful preparation of the metal surface. Special glass powder is then applied using various methods. In the next step, the coated metal object is heated in an oven, with the temperature typically between 750 and 850 degrees Celsius. During this firing process, the glass powder – the enamel – melts and permanently bonds with the metal surface. After heating, the object is slowly cooled, creating a hard, smooth, and resistant surface. The Landesgalerie Burgenland offers the opportunity to gain experience in the technique of enamelling in small groups.
