In reference to the music theatre premiere of Bizet's Carmen at the Tyrolean State Theatre, the first symphony concert of the season features a special connection to the opera stage: The TSOI begins with Rodion Shchedrin's Carmen Suite – a fascinating, modern ballet music based on Bizet, performed exclusively for strings and a large percussion setup. Shchedrin composed the suite in 1967 for his wife, the legendary prima ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, who dreamed of dancing Carmen. The world premiere at the Bolshoi Theatre caused a scandal – triggered by the provocative combination of sensual staging and passionately intense music. The uncompromising intensity and rhythmic sharpness made the work, which remains one of the most exciting adaptations of an opera classic, world-famous.
