On the opening of the Positive Futures Festival 2026, we present two fascinating voices of the global underground: the Kurdish-Dutch artist Meral Polat combines psychedelic rock with captivating Afrobeat in the context of women's rights, while American artist Cleo Reed delights with an innovative fusion of folk, blues, and dystopian rap. Meral Polat: The Dutch singer, actress, and theater maker Meral Polat, with Kurdish roots, brings the Kurdish soul to the stage with raw blues and hypnotic sounds. Together with her band, she blends Turkish psychedelic rock of the 70s with the traditional art of Kurdish Dengbej storytellers. On her new album "MEYDAN," she pushes further genre boundaries and expands this unique sound with Mali blues and Nigerian Afrobeat. Cleo Reed: Emerging from the black underground sound, Cleo Reed moves between participatory art, music composition, instrument making, installation, and textile art. The artist, raised in NYC and Washington, DC, released the highly acclaimed double LP "CUNTRY" in 2025. The work combines American work songs in the tradition of blues, soul, folk, and country, with dystopian electronic rap. This duality explores opposing forces—the contrasts between Reed's urban and southern origins.
