What's it about?

Behind the scenes of Austria's first modern thermal spa The Felsenbad (today: Felsentherme) in Bad Gastein was designed by the Salzburg architect Gerhard Garstenauer in the Brutalist style. Only 2 years passed from the first draft in summer 1966 until Austria's first thermal spa was ceremoniously opened on September 28, 1968. "In the Felsenbad, coal carriers and plumbers discuss architecture - that means a lot in Austria," the press wrote at the time. The ultra-modern ambience between concrete and natural rock, as well as the de-radonized thermal water without chemical additives, attracted many guests, making the facility a great success. The Felsenbad was furnished with Space Age design furniture and was published in trade journals as far away as Japan. The building has been a listed monument since 2021, and the guided tour offers insights into areas that are otherwise not accessible.
