With her debut novel LAHEA (Otto Müller Verlag), the Linz-based writer Lisa-Viktoria Niederberger creates a fictional island society that functions as a counter-image to our present – and remains anything but a simple thought experiment. The Island of Ebria Ebria is an island – far from our time and yet frighteningly close. When a dead whale, buried under plastic waste, washes ashore, the inhabitants take only what they need – never more than they are entitled to. They live in balance with nature and in a society that has left greed and domination behind, well aware of how fragile this balance is. At the center is Lahea, daughter of the village elder, who sets out to explore Ebria – and in doing so is confronted with suppressed truths, cracks in the community structure, and a growing movement that questions everything Ebria stands for. Feminism, Ecology, Solidarity Feminist perspectives, ecological questions, and solidary ways of life characterize the novel – impressively, visionarily, and poetically told. Niederberger, who has been exploring the relationships between humans and nature in her writing for years, poses fundamental questions with LAHEA: How much care does a community need? How does it deal with betrayal and violence? And how does it hold together when the foundation crumbles? About the Author Lisa-Viktoria Niederberger, *1988, lives as a writer and cultural scientist in Linz. She has received multiple awards for her literary work, including the Theodor-Körner-Preis, the Kunstförderpreis, and the Marianne-von-Willemer-Frauen-Literatur-Preis of the City of Linz. Most recently, the children's book Helle Sterne, dunkle Nacht (Achse Verlag, 2024) and the essay Dunkelheit. Ein Plädoyer (Haymon, 2025) were published. LAHEA is her first novel.
