
Rudolf Buchbinder is one of the grandmasters of piano literature. Tradition and innovation, fidelity to the work and freedom, authenticity and cosmopolitan openness merge in his interpretations. On this morning in Kremsmünster, Buchbinder spans a programmatic arc from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart through Beethoven to Franz Schubert's last piano sonata. With the Sonata in B-flat major, D 960, Schubert explored a highly introspective sound world shortly before his death. This is felt through the high melodic inventiveness, harmonic sophistication, and the special gift to translate profound emotional expressions into musical form. Beethoven's 'Appassionata' Sonata, a major part of Buchbinder's repertoire, is also featured. He sees his role as an interpreter as reading even pieces he has performed hundreds of times as if they were new.
