What's it about?

Arthur Schnitzler's Reigen has always been shrouded in scandal. What was considered offensive over a hundred years ago is now commonplace. What causes problems today was hardly an issue back then. The Reigen: a scene play about people who find themselves in a field of tension - in dialogue, in interpretation, and in time. Then as now. It is touching how Schnitzler's characters plunge headlong into their love affairs to wrest pleasure and passion from their "oh so short lives." One laughs about it, and in the next moment, the laughter catches in one's throat when one witnesses how they lie, pretend, manipulate, and play with their power. Schnitzler dissects his characters with clairvoyance: overwhelmed by their own fears and the pressure of convention, they fail to remain entirely themselves in the most intimate moments. Not unfamiliar to us, perhaps? Where we conceal our naked vulnerability, it catches not only the lovers, the players, but also us, the viewers. The Neue Spielraum offers the perfect arena for Schnitzler's classic to watch these slippery slides on the dance floor of love from all sides. Circle with us around closeness and alienation, scandal and society, love and double standards.
