The Legend of the Holy Drinker

The Legend of the Holy Drinker

What's it about?

Under a bridge on the Seine, Andreas lingers as a failed existence. Through a mysterious encounter with a strange man, the possibility of a new beginning opens up. But how do you deal with happiness when it suddenly overwhelms you? The tramp is driven through the streets of Paris, life wants to flow and be celebrated. A little drink won't hurt, will it? We follow the good-natured, supposedly naive vagrant, recognize ourselves in his inner division, and observe how the past gradually begins to catch up with him. Roth skillfully depicts this development and raises the question of the fatefulness of our lives. His poetic language leads us into the depths, his stories stir us up, but always also tell of the silent longing for miracles. It is comforting and deeply moving how Joseph Roth, in his literary testament, describes the fate of the drinker Andreas - at once a mirror of his own life and exemplary for many who walk this path. He shows us two faces that can never be reconciled and yet can be brought together in one person. In a gentle tone, full of quiet dignity and fine humor, he opens a space where pain, hope, and humor can quietly coexist.
