What's it about?

A fascinating journey through the centuries is presented in this castle complex. The castle was first mentioned in documents in 1254. According to dendrochronological studies, the impressive five-story residential tower and the now three-aisled chapel were built around 1330 – a testament to medieval construction techniques. The three-story Gothic residential building with the attached economic building was added as an extension from later Gothic periods. These structures together form a characteristic image of late medieval fortification architecture. The current appearance of the castle was shaped by the Viennese architect Adolf Stipperger, who revitalized the complex as a residence starting in 1872. Besides his significant roles as Carinthia's state conservator and organizer of the Alpine Club, Stipperger was also privately committed as a conservation-minded builder – a pioneer of monument protection.
