
“Boccaccio and Petrarch - a lifelong poetic friendship” Lecture with slides by Dr. Klaus Engert, Würzburg Boccaccio and Petrarch, together with Dante, form the Tuscan triumvirate of great 14th-century Italian literature, known in Italian as “le tre corone”. Boccaccio and the nine-year older Petrarch are characterized by an unusually intense poetic friendship. In the spring of 1351, one of the most fruitful encounters in Italian and European literary history took place, which became groundbreaking for the cultural flourishing of the Renaissance. Their intensive correspondence spanned twenty-four years of their lives until death separated them. Humanity, kindness, and deep trust characterize this intimate friendship, which, despite differing political views, survived the storms of time and was an essential source of inspiration for both great poets.
