Museum für Volkskultur

Spittal an der Drau, Carinthia

ausstellungmuseumstour

On two floors of Porcia Castle, there are 1001 ways to grasp, experience, and discover the everyday culture of the past. "Participation allowed" is the magic word against boredom here. 47 thematic departments make the Museum for Folk Culture one of the largest in the Alpine region. Cinemas and multimedia stations offer the latest information. In addition, the museum offers highly attractive media offerings: A special highlight in the museum is the Carinthia panorama "i steh´ drauf!" (I'm into it!), a walk-on zoom-in map of Carinthia covering 200 m² – giving visitors the feeling of hovering 10,000 meters above Carinthia and allowing them to view details down to 50 cm in size with special magnifiers. In the 3D panorama cinema, you can experience "Impressions from Upper Carinthia" of the highest quality. Two other cinemas provide information about Alm (mountain pasture) life throughout the year and the tourist resorts of Seeboden and Millstatt. With the "Smartphone Audio-Guide," information on all thematic departments of the museum can also be listened to on one's own mobile phone while viewing the objects in the museum – and that in four languages (D, E, I, SLO)! Thanks to an extraordinary donation from Daniel Brenter, an aircraft mechanic at Austrian Airlines, a historic glider has been suspended above the museum's entrance area since spring 2017. Since spring 2019, the true-to-scale replica of the Tauernbahn from Spittal/Millstättersee-Mallnitz can also be admired in the museum. From summer 2022, several hologram installations will also enrich the museum.
