What's it about?

Opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi / Libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni after a scenario by François Auguste Ferdinand Mariette / In Italian with German surtitles Great melodies, magnificent crowd scenes, an exotic setting – these are the ingredients that have made Giuseppe Verdi's late work Aida one of the most fascinating creations in opera literature for over 150 years. Yet the scenic and musical bombast forms the backdrop for a sensitive plea that – in the words of Dmitri Shostakovich – "exposes the oppressors and arouses pity for the victims." The commission for the opera was given in 1869 by the Viceroy of Egypt, Ismail Pasha, who wanted to use the ancient history of his country to glorify his dynasty and adorn it with the name of the most famous composer of his time. Verdi, always extremely skeptical of all forms of institutionalized power, was reluctant to be harnessed to this political cart, but recognized the theatrical potential of the material. At the center of the plot is the Egyptian general Radamès. In the conflict between his love for the Ethiopian princess Aida, whose people he has militarily defeated, and his political duties, he can do justice to neither side. With musical subtlety on the one hand and pompous state staging on the other, Verdi shows how love and trust can only exist in the grip of a merciless power apparatus at the cost of death. This interplay of grand political drama and intimate chamber play will be staged by artistic director Aron Stiehl, with chief conductor Chin-Chao Lin taking the musical direction. Set design and costumes will be created by the in-house artists Thomas Stingl and Emmanuela Cossar.
