Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor Premiere
What's it about?
A comical-fantastical opera in three acts by Otto Nicolai, with a libretto by Salomon Hermann Mosenthal based on William Shakespeare's comedy of the same name. In German with surtitles. Italian comedy meets German forest – this could summarize the dramaturgical core idea of Otto Nicolai's opera, which premiered in 1849. And yet, the piece is set in the most English of places and is based on a work by the most English of poets: William Shakespeare's comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor. Falstaff makes a mistake that quickly becomes known in Windsor. He sends love letters—identical ones—to two married neighbors, Frau Fluth and Frau Reich. The two decide to avenge their honor against the old white man and, in the case of Frau Fluth, also to teach her own jealous husband a lesson. While Falstaff increasingly makes himself impossible in town, the Reichs try to marry off their daughter Anna. She is to choose between two suitors traditionally proposed by her parents, but she intends to marry Fenton, whom she herself has chosen. In the forest outside Windsor, there is a final showdown where the boundaries between reality and fantasy blur, and the traditional social order is questioned. Nicolai, one of the few North Alpine composers of his time to appreciate Italian opera, combined the melodic bliss of his 'comically-fantastical' work with the profound sensitivity of German Romanticism. This brilliantly staged gender comedy will be directed by Andrea Schwalbach, whose recent production of Sister Act was celebrated triumphantly at the city theater.
