Der Diener zweier Herren
What's it about?
Title: Der Diener zweier Herren Description: Il servitore di due padroni / Comedy in three acts by Carlo Goldoni / Translated from Italian by H. C. Artmann / Adaptation by Herbert Wochinz Dressed in men's clothing and accompanied by his servant Truffaldino, Beatrice sets out for Venice to find Florindo – her lover who is wrongly accused of murdering her brother. It so happens that both end up in the same inn without knowing of each other's presence: the beginning of a game that quickly gets out of control. Because Truffaldino, no longer young and always short of money, suddenly takes on a second job – with Florindo. Two masters, double the pay, double the risk. Amidst tasks, misunderstandings, and lies, life quickly becomes difficult to organize neatly. Moreover, the affairs of Venice's respected citizens are more opaque than the water in the lagoon. Smeraldina, a servant like him and outspoken, also interferes, resists, and is not easily subdued – giving the play its own direction... In Carlo Goldoni's Der Diener zweier Herren, premiered in 1746, popular Commedia dell’arte reaches a peak where improvisation turns into form without losing its lightness. We perform the lively adaptation by H. C. Artmann and Herbert Wochinz, whose close collaboration, among others for the Porcia comedy festival, flourished in the 1950s at Tonhof in Maria Saal. It combines Italian vitality with Austrian linguistic wit and artistry. Thus, our fantastic comedy ensemble, all audience favorites and not shy of Lazzi (comic routines), together with Klagenfurt debutant Ronny Jakubaschk, draws a splendid arc from Venice's lagoon to Lake Wörth. The matinee of Der Diener zweier Herren will, by the way, be entirely dedicated to the legendary theater maker Herbert Wochinz! Details can be found on our website.
