WORD AND SOUND Dieses unruhige Ich. Ingeborg Bachmann. A biography (2026) Presentation by the author Dieter Burdorf (University of Leipzig, Germany) in conversation with Johannes Waßmer (University of Klagenfurt) "Dieses unruhige Ich" – this is how Ingeborg Bachmann described herself. It was a self that experienced relationships of existential intensity, relationships in which life and writing were inextricably intertwined. Bachmann's tragic love for Paul Celan was a defining part of her life. She tried to lead a quasi-marital life with Max Frisch for four years, which ended in her breakdown. A summer affair with the young Hans Magnus Enzensberger was transformed into a friendship that also broke apart. In contrast, Bachmann maintained a stable personal and professional relationship with Hans Werner Henze. She discussed drafts with other writers such as Ilse Aichinger, Marie Luise Kaschnitz, and Nelly Sachs.
