Hawaiian Hula Dance

Sunday 15 November · 10:00Öblarner Haus für Alle · steiermark

What's it about?

10:00 AM - 4:30 PM, Course fee €95 Course location: ÖHA History of the Hula Dance: Hula is a storytelling dance from Hawaii that is much more than just hip-shaking. Since ancient Hawaii had no written language, the dance originally served as an oral tradition to pass down history, myths, and the deep connection to nature and the gods from generation to generation. However, after the arrival of missionaries in the 19th century, Hula, along with the Hawaiian language and music, was suppressed and banned for many years. At protected, secret locations, Hula and the language were preserved. Today, this unique, culturally deeply rooted art form is recognized worldwide as a symbol of the "Healing Arts." Themes such as nature, love (Aloha), memories of people and events, and much more are woven into the dance and have a healing effect. In this workshop, you will learn the basic posture and fundamental steps of Hula, as well as coordination exercises that keep our brains active, grounded, and connected, bringing you fully into the moment. You will also learn through dance the difference between the two main styles "kahiko" (traditional) and "auana" (modern), tell stories with your hands, and gain insights into Hawaiian history and language. What to bring: · Non-slip socks · Comfortable clothing · Pareo or wide skirt · Writing materials · Dancing barefoot Instructor: Jenny Pippan lives in Klagenfurt and has been learning Hula from Hawaiian teachers in Switzerland, Austria, and Hawaii for over 20 years, and has been passionately teaching it throughout Austria for the past 15 years. www.alohahawaii.at
