NEW OPERETTA VIENNA OPERETTA New production of Countess Mariza, Kálmán's musical fireworks in Austro-Hungarian luminous colours! Emmerich Kálmán's operetta Countess Mariza (premiere 1924) is set on a Hungarian estate and tells a romantically comedic story of mistaken identities. The wealthy Countess Mariza invents a fictional fiancé named "Baron Koloman Zsupán" to get rid of annoying suitors. Surprisingly, however, a man with exactly that name actually appears. At the same time, the impoverished Count Tassilo works on her estate, posing as an administrator under a false name to earn money for his sister's dowry. Initially, a dispute arises between Mariza and Tassilo, but gradually they fall in love. When Mariza learns that Tassilo is actually a count and has hidden his true identity out of pride, misunderstandings arise. In the end, however, all complications are resolved: Mariza recognizes Tassilo's honesty and love, and the two find each other. Direction: Alexander M.
