St. Xaver Stadtpfarrkirche in Leoben

The imposing St. Xaver City Parish Church has shaped the cityscape of Leoben for over 300 years. Built between 1660 and 1665, the building reflects the masterpiece of architect Peter Franz Carlone, a prominent representative of the famous Baroque master builder dynasty. The exterior facade bears witness to the Renaissance style, while the magnificent interior decoration represents the so-called "Jesuit Baroque". Particularly impressive are the richly decorated high altar and the pulpit from the 17th century, which were donated by the Archbishop of Salzburg, Maximilian Gandolph von Khünburg. The central altarpiece shows the apotheosis of the church's patron saint, St. Francis Xavier, and is flanked by artfully crafted statues. In addition to its artistic beauty, the church has a turbulent history. Originally built as a Jesuit church, it was hardly used after the order was abolished in 1773. It was not until 1811 that it was officially designated a city parish church, replacing the Jakobskirche located outside the city.
