Wiener Sängerknaben
What's it about?
Christmas concert by the Vienna Boys' Choir. As 'ambassadors' of Austria and its musical culture, the Vienna Boys' Choir is known worldwide. Their repertoire ranges from folk songs to Viennese waltzes to the most delicate art songs. The probably most famous boys' choir in the world has a long tradition: since the thirteenth century, boys have been singing in the Vienna Court Chapel. In 1498, Maximilian I moved his court and chapel to Vienna. Musicians like Mozart, Salieri, and Bruckner worked at the Viennese court; Joseph Haydn, Michael Haydn, and Franz Schubert sang as boys in the court music chapel. Today, there are about 100 Vienna Boys' Choir members aged between 9 and 14, divided into four choirs. Together, the choirs give 300 concerts a year before nearly half a million spectators worldwide.
