Off stage, there is emptiness, no one seems to understand him and his lyrics, he spends his life largely alone. Except for Mark, who is part of the band but withdraws more and more – and until Paul meets Annika after a concert. She shares his fascination for noise bands like Hanatarash or Atrax Morgue, and Paul falls in love with her seamlessly. When they have a child, his urge to express everything in murderously loud music subsides. But what remains of his art now? And why has Mark finally disappeared? Loners, outsiders, those suffering in silence – in My Life as a Noiseband, Clemens J. Setz gathers stories about figures on the fringes of society. With observations of everyday life that are as precise as they are poetic, they lead us through shifted realities in which the familiar, the grotesque, and the obsessive revolve around each other. Violence and loneliness stand alongside moments of unconventional tenderness and the longing for closeness and connection. Clemens J. Setz was born in Graz in 1982, where he studied mathematics and German language and literature. Today he lives with his wife and daughter as a translator and freelance writer in Vienna. In 2011, he was awarded the Leipzig Book Fair Prize for his collection of short stories Die Liebe zur Zeit des Mahlstädter Kindes. His novel Indigo was shortlisted for the German Book Prize 2012 and was awarded the Literature Prize of the Cultural Committee of German Business 2013. In 2014, his first volume of poetry Die Vogelstraußtrompete was published. For his novel Die Stunde zwischen Frau und Gitarre, Setz received the Wilhelm Raabe Literature Prize 2015. Setz was invited to the Mülheim Theatre Days with three of his plays. Most recently in 2023 with Der Triumph der Waldrebe in Europa.
