What's it about?
Since 2012, Nora Steiner and Madlaina Pollina have performed under the name Steiner & Madlaina. Three years later, in 2015, they released their first EP. Since then, the two have become a fixed presence in German-speaking female indie pop. They are Swiss with a European identity; Madlaina Pollina has a half-Italian background, Nora Steiner a half-Greek background, and through working and living across borders (the band has now split between Vienna and Zurich), they have never been to be underestimated as a nostalgic homeland phenomenon. The Swiss element in Steiner & Madlaina is the friction surface where open-minded thinking, privileges, and responsibilities are tested and negotiated. Almost every album contains at least one song in Swiss German – the mother tongue, the home, and the personal. At the same time, each album also reaches far beyond that. These albums were – after the first two EPs "Ready to Climb" 2015 and "Speak" 2017 (both on Zurich label Lauter) – "Cheers" 2018, "Wünsch mir Glück" 2021, and "Risiko" 2023. In 2023, Steiner & Madlaina composed the film score for "Sophia, der Tod und Ich". In 2024, they released a digital-only EP "Ich kanns nicht glauben". The band has been releasing all previous albums through the long-standing collaboration with the German indie label Glitterhouse Records. In 2025, the fourth album "Nah Dran" will continue this collaboration and mark the band’s 10th anniversary. A clear thematic focus, excellent songwriting, and a consistent musical development run through these 10 years. Nora Steiner and Madlaina Pollina not only present themselves as – but are also – friends who actively live the idea of an equal artistic partnership. In songwriting, behind-the-scenes work, and on stage, they push each other and the project forward, sharing the spotlight. Steiner & Madlaina are among the few duos without a secret frontwoman or mastermind. Each writes their own songs and lyrics with different, personal qualities – Madlaina Pollina finds it easier to write in Swiss German and enjoys wordplay, while Nora Steiner creates tableaux, story snippets, and images that convey the typical mood moments. Both share themes of relationships, love, class critique, Switzerland and Central Europe, political-European consciousness, Check Your Privilege, feminism, and the present. Their message is always: be respectful to each other and (please, finally, more!) make an effort to do the best with what you have. We are neither so well off nor so badly off that it’s not worth criticizing and changing the wrong things, or valuing and protecting the right things. Pop music has always been the medium best suited to negotiating themes and phenomena of the zeitgeist. Less rigid, angry, and exclusive than subculture, not flattened by mass culture. Indie, with its content focus and accessibility, marks the sweet spot of this pop culture. In this sense, Steiner & Madlaina are an indie pop band in the strictest sense, in their content, impetus, and sound. Their sound has a particularly high recognition value – melodies, danceability, lyrics, and a hook you sing along or nod to. The desire for musicality. They often expand the classic band setup, singing and playing acoustic and electric guitar themselves. As a band and close friends, the "Romantikkommission" (almost) always joins. Often, there are also string players, wind instruments, and more.
