Traditionelles Tauplitzer Nikolospiel

What's it about?

Approximately 60 masked participants are involved in this performance. The human facial features are represented by Krampus masks, which are lovingly crafted by local woodcarvers. It is referred to as a 'Stuben- or Umgangsspiel' (house or procession game). The Tauplitz play texts are among the oldest in the region. Men dressed in straw, called 'die Schab', lead the procession and announce the Nikolaus parade with loud bangs. An impressive scene features Saint Nicholas riding into Tauplitz on the 'Nikoloross' (Nicholas horse) to the waiting children. The 'Jeder Mann' scene in the Tauplitz Nikolospiel is also a popular performance, where a rather ragged man, marked by alcohol, asks the priest to hear his confession. A special feature is the variety of different scenes and characters. Shoemakers and tailors (prelude) open the play, and the underworld lord Lucifer with his dark companions conclude this unique folk play.
