Discovering the Diversity in Late Autumn – Meadows, Forests, and Landscapes

Saturday 14 November · 09:00Kühberg Rechnitz · burgenland

What's it about?

How do herbs, shrubs, and trees survive the winter? How do the species prepare for the next spring? And what can the vegetation, the structure of a forest, and the plant composition tell us about the use and history of a landscape? On this excursion, we explore a diverse landscape section with different types of meadows from moist to dry, various forest communities, and ecologically valuable biotopes of open land. Late autumn offers special insights into the survival strategies of plants: we discover how they prepare for the cold season and what conditions they create to successfully sprout again in the coming spring and occupy their ecological niche. Together, we will discover: how woody plants and herbaceous plants can still be reliably identified in late autumn, which strategies plants use to survive the winter – from buds and seeds to underground storage organs...
