Grasshopper Search in the Burgenland Alps
What's it about?
Burgenland is famous for its Pannonian species, which love warmth and dryness, and in Southern Burgenland, it also has a share of the sub-Mediterranean Illyricum. The "alpine" side of this low-lying federal state is rarely in focus, yet the extensive forest areas around the highest elevation - the Geschriebenstein at 884 m above sea level - offer habitat for a grasshopper world that is quite exotic for Burgenland conditions. We hope to confirm not only the Alpine Mountain Grasshopper (!) but also the last Burgenland occurrence of the Mottled Grasshopper. Forest edges and moist meadow valleys will be our preferred terrain for searching for grasshoppers. With the bat detector, we also hope to find the hidden, high-frequency singing bush crickets and plump grasshoppers.
