Mephistopheles ABOUT THE CONCERT: Martin Haselböck on the program of the orchestral matinee: "Franz Liszt adapted the myth of Dr. Faustus into two magnificent orchestral works: he had already become familiar with Goethe's great poem in 1830, and his long engagement with the text culminated in Liszt's greatest and most significant orchestral composition, his 'Faust Symphony,' which was premiered on September 5 during the unveiling of the still-standing Goethe-Schiller monument in Weimar. In this version, we also hear the masterpiece in Raiding. In 1836, Nikolaus Lenau reworked the Faust story into a melancholic nihilistic poem. Liszt was sympathetic to this interpretation, ..."
