Franz Liszt was not "a quiet piano player for calm citizens and cozy sleepers," as his contemporary Heinrich Heine wrote. The "Hungarian Rhapsodies" are among the most distinctive and virtuosic works of his piano repertoire, and no other composition, besides the "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2," his most popular piano piece alongside the "Liebestraum," has shaped the Liszt image more than this. The Rhapsodies combine powerful melodies, improvisatory passages, and dynamic contrasts. Each develops its own dramaturgy - from passionate intensity to poetic reflection and beyond.
