In the far east of Austria, there is a very special habitat for Central Europe: the soda lakes. Here in the soda-rich water live primeval crabs, which have existed in their form since the time of the dinosaurs and today serve as important food for birds such as the avocet. On the salty edges of the lakes, plants grow that can also be found on sea coasts. And the constant change between wetness and dryness repeatedly creates new small habitats.
