Lecture - The Hungarian Freedom Fight and Burgenland

Wednesday 4 November · 18:30Burgenländisches Bildungswerk · burgenland

What's it about?

The Hungarian freedom fight and the events of autumn 1956 In autumn 1956, Austria's still young neutrality was put to the test. The Hungarian people sought the path to freedom and wanted to free themselves from their Soviet occupiers. Tanks of the Soviet army abruptly ended this dream. About 3,500 Hungarians lost their lives. Within a few weeks, around 200,000 refugees crossed our eastern border seeking protection in Burgenland. The local population showed solidarity with the refugees, provided all possible help, and received high recognition from around the world. The chronicler and author Wolfgang Bachkönig has researched the events of that time and summarized them in a PowerPoint presentation. The event is organized in cooperation with the Eisenstadt City Library and Thalia Eisenstadt. Registration required! Email: veranstaltungen@bgld-bildungswerk.at
