Franziskanerkirche - Rektoratskirche St. Michael

Eisenstadt, Burgenland

The Franciscan Church and monastery in Haydngasse were founded around 1386 by Archbishop Johann Kanizsai. In 1529, the Franciscan Church was destroyed by the Turks. In 1629, Count Nikolaus Esterházy rebuilt the church in Baroque style from the ruins after the victorious Battle of Lackenbach. In 1630, it was consecrated in honor of St. Archangel Michael and handed over to the Franciscan convent, which had already been founded in 1625.Inside the church are beautiful Renaissance altars by Italian masters, with rich stucco decorations from the time of its construction. On the gallery, one of the so-called Haydn organs from the 18th century can be admired. However, the eye is drawn to the Rococo pulpit from 1752. The reliefs depict St. Francis's sermon to the fish and birds.
