When spring arrived, they set out. Children – often no older than eight – left their home villages, their families, and their childhood. Poverty forced them to walk across the border into the neighboring Allgäu. They were called Schwabenkinder (Swabian children). The journey was long and dangerous, the work hard. On foreign farms, they herded cattle, worked in fields and stables – far from home, often without protection, sometimes without hope. And yet, they took this path year after year. This exhibition tells of courage and deprivation, of lost childhood and great resilience. It makes visible what was long kept silent and reminds us of children whose fates continue to shape our Alpine history. On performance days of the open-air stage, the Wunderkammer is open until 8:00 PM. With the ticket for the performance, entry to the Wunderkammer and the visit to the special exhibition are free.
