From 1726 to 1741, Johann Sebastian Bach published the comprehensive compendium of exemplary works for baroque keyboard instruments under the title Clavierübung (Keyboard Practice). The second part, published in 1735, which highlights the two-manual harpsichord, consists of two compositions representing the Italian and French styles: while the magnificent Concerto in F major, known as the Italian Concerto, is familiar to most Bach enthusiasts, the Ouverture in B minor, a large-scale French-inspired suite, is a true rarity. In his harpsichord recital, our artistic director Peter Waldner presents these two significant keyboard works, which are tonally very different: Bach likely chose keys that are a tritone apart. What connects the two compositions is the use of the possibilities offered by a two-manual harpsichord, such as echo effects that frequently occur in the suite. Peter Waldner complements his Bach program with another suite in French style and the Capriccio on the Departure of his highly esteemed brother, an early work with high Italian inspiration.
