In the 8th century, the roots of the later Salzburg Archdiocese, which would become one of the most important European principalities, were established. During a time of new spiritual and cultural revival, figures such as the saints Rupert, Virgil, and Vitalis promoted the development of church structures, the construction of churches, and the emergence of early art and educational traditions. Starting from a rare Limoges cross from around 1250, the exhibition provides insight into this early art period through selected original pieces from the Romanesque and early Gothic eras. Sculptures and liturgical vessels reveal the religious, artistic, and societal forces that contributed to the formation of the Salzburg Archdiocese and significantly shaped its cultural identity.
