Unter dem Stern des Orients. Orientalische Krippenkunst im Alpenland
What's it about?
This exhibition by the Verband der Krippenfreunde Österreichs features significant works by masters such as Romed Speckbacher, Johann Nepomuk Giner, Josef Zeissler, as well as the Pinzgau nativity scene master Xandi Schläffer, with loans from the Tiroler Volkskunstmuseum Innsbruck, the Bergbau- und Gotikmuseum Leogang, and private collections on the theme of the oriental nativity scene. **Oriental Nativity Scenes and Depictions** The focus of the nativity exhibition is on oriental nativity scenes and representations in various sizes and types of figures. Pilgrimages to the Holy Land in the 19th century influenced how the birth of Jesus Christ was depicted in nativity scenes. Pilgrims who visited the Holy Land brought back very concrete visual ideas of the landscape, architecture, and people of the Orient. The nativity scenes in this tradition show the birthplace of Jesus with oriental buildings and desert landscapes. The depiction of animals and plants was based on the flora and fauna of the Middle East, and the clothing of the figures often reflected the travel experiences of the pilgrims. Many oriental nativity scenes also incorporated local elements from the Alpine region. The exhibition is organized by the Verband der Krippenfreunde Österreichs with support from the Tiroler Volkskunstmuseum in cooperation with the Bergbau- und Gotikmuseum Leogang. **Opening Hours** November 21, 2026, to January 31, 2027 Wednesday to Sunday, daily from 1 PM to 5 PM. Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Closed on January 1.
