What's it about?

Music from somewhere between the Alps and the Balkans. It sounds like folk music, but oh no - what is that?! The five musicians of Alpkan often don't quite know themselves what possesses them - chords tumble over each other, scales are shifted from major to gypsy scales, well-known traditional earworms like "Oide gstorbm" or "Kannst Du Knödel kochen" appear in a new guise - sparking, rocking or snotty, but always with a spark of humor, with a wink and a shot of satire. But it is folk music. Fitting the trend, one might today call it "New Folk Music". "Music should simply be fun," explains Doktor Kastler, describing the group's self-image. He plays trumpet, sometimes flugelhorn or cornet, and sings. Actually, all five sing. His brother Bernhard "El Castlero" plays trombone and tenor horn and is responsible for one or two arrangements. But there is enough room for improvisation with Alpkan, which Mr. Stockinger on tuba or Stereo Gaina on guitar also know how to use. The fifth man in the group is drummer Shegovic, who sometimes borrows from techno with his danceable, monotonous beats. But it is folk music. When "Schöner Grüner Gartenzaun", a farewell to "neighbors", sees a surprising revival of Tanzlsingen, or when "Schuach" recites a probably complete list of all shoe types in the world, at the latest any clarification is removed - it is Alpkan. El Castlero (trombone, tenor horn, vocals) - Stereo Gaina (guitar, vocals) - Mr. Stockinger (tuba, vocals) Doktor Kastler (trumpet, flugelhorn, cornet, vocals) - Shegovic (drums, vocals)
