What's it about?

Theater Chronos Prima Facie* A play by Suzie Miller. By Suzie Miller. Directed by Leonard Dick. Music by Anna Buchegger. Stage design by Milena Keller. Costumes by Celine Walentowski. Featuring Magdalena Köchl. Dramaturgy by Cosima Schubert. Also featuring Sophie Fröhlich & Helene Fröhlich (Marketing) | Edi Jäger (Assistant). Production by Theater Chronos Salzburg. Duration approximately 85 minutes. Australian Writers' Guild Award 2020 / Olivier Awards 2023. A worldwide celebrated, multiple award-winning theater success — Suzie Miller's compelling monologue about power, justice, and the limits of the system. A young lawyer who defends the law — until it lets her down. From defender to accuser. A piece that resonates. "I only know, somewhere. Sometime. Somehow. Something has to change." Against all odds, the working-class girl Tessa Ensler becomes a successful criminal defense lawyer, representing, among others, men accused of sexual assault. She believes in the law, in the justice system, and advocates for the presumption of innocence. In dubio pro reo. In doubt, for the defendant. Then something happens that causes everything she believed in to collapse. She becomes a victim. From defender to accuser. She must experience firsthand that female experiences of sexual violence do not fit into the male-dominated justice system. The perpetrator is her colleague Julian, with whom Tessa had a workplace affair. During a night together at Tessa's apartment, a sexual assault occurs. She flees the building and reports the incident, despite her slim chances of winning in court. The prima facie evidence, or "appearance of evidence," speaks against her. But she chooses to fight. It is an indictment of all of us. Of a justice system created by men, for men. "So much is at stake: my private life, friends, family. My career. Everything, simply everything. That terrifies me." Since her law studies, author Suzie Miller had the idea for PRIMA FACIE*. But it was only realized in the context of the global #MeToo movement since 2017. The play bridges art and social change. Because even today, reporting a sexual crime involves attending all court hearings: appearing at the indictment, cross-examination, and media coverage — which requires extraordinary courage. The process of coming to terms is long and demands great trust in the justice system. But does this system even deserve that trust? Or does it continue to cause victims of sexual assault to remain silent? How can, how must society evolve to reform this area? Suzie Miller's powerful monologue premiered in Sydney, Australia, in 2019. Over 300,000 viewers watched the play live in cinemas via the National Theatre's broadcast in London. It was awarded the Australian Writers’ Guild Award 2020, the David Williamson Award 2020, and the Olivier Award 2023. *Prima Facie: legal term for "appearance of evidence," "until revoked." "Great actress. ...overwhelming presence that will touch many people. Respect for her courage in choosing this play as a young woman." (Audience member) "Very impressed, this is a highlight of the independent theater scene for a long time!" (Theater maker Salzburg) Press reviews: "Outstanding acting performance captivates from the first minute." (Salzburger Nachrichten) "Standing ovations from a deeply moved audience." (dz)
